2018 Creative Generation Excellence Awards in Visual Art Exhibition

Year 12 student, Jake Walters, has had his artwork ‘Helen’ selected as one of the 30 schools in the region (183 in the state) to be displayed at the 2018 Creative Generation Excellence Awards in Visual Art South East Exhibition. Finalists will be exhibited at GOMA.

Jake created this work about his family friend Helen who is suffering from Alzheimer’s disease. To create this artwork he interviewed the subject’s husband and took many photos and process drawings to document and capture how dementia is affecting Helen in particular her hands and eye focus. This piece explores the effects of Alzheimer’s on the identity of the individual for themselves and loved ones.  The idea of segmenting the hand and eye from the major portrait came from acknowledging the symbolic importance of these parts.  This painting hopes to reimagine these features as they once were, while expressing the heartbreaking reality of how the disease soon takes them away.

The exhibition at AB Paterson College, 10 AB Paterson Drive, Arundel will open Saturday August 25 and feature guest speaker and presenter; Michael Zavros who is one of Australia’s most famous artist at the moment.

Congratulations Jake.
