Volleyballers set their win at Senior Schools Cup

Traditionally held in Toowoomba, this year’s Senior Schools Cup was brought to Brisbane for the first time, and would see two boys teams from Chisholm compete in the U/16 competition. Logan Metro Sports Complex was buzzing with excitement as one of our teams kicked off the long-weekend on Friday morning with a 2-0 win to start the carnival, as schools from around the state poured in to spectate and scrutinise their competition. With a long programme ahead and several games still to come, the students were pumped and keen for the competition. By the end of the 13 hour day, we sat in a respectable position, with one team in the quarter finals and the other playing-off for a shot at the top eight.

Saturday saw the boys off to an early start, their games interspersed with officiating duty throughout the morning and into the afternoon. Both teams played several tight games, with all but one coming down to a two point difference, though unfortunately not in our favour. Day 2 also saw the save of the carnival, with Tom Needham running 15 metres out of court to save the ball on the third hit, and landing it in by mere centre metres – even the umpire collapsed in amazement.

Sunday saw the close of the tournament, with our teams picking up one win and one loss between them. Funnily enough, three other schools were using our team motto – “Get Keen!” – by the end of the tournament. Although we didn’t finish as well as we had hoped, it was still an improvement on last year, and in a higher division, but most importantly we had fun. With many lessons learnt across the weekend, the entire squad is already getting keen for next year.
